“In prayer there must be deliberateness—the secret place, the inner chamber, the fixed time, the shut door against distraction and intruders. In that secret place the Father is waiting for us. He is certainly there as He is in Heaven. Be reverent, as Moses when he took the shoes from off his feet! Be trustful, because you are having an audience with One who is infinite sympathy and love! Be comforted, because there is no problem He cannot solve, no knot He cannot untie!”
F. B. Meyer, quoted in
Magnificent Prayer, p. 187

But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
Matthew 6:6 (ESV)
And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark he [Jesus] departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed.
Mark 1:35 (ESV)
Is it difficult to believe that what the Lord Jesus taught and found necessary to practice in His own life, is what he means for us to do? He wants us to come, and He waits to meet us in the secret place.

One morning I had just begun my time in the Lord’s presence. My heart was burdened by what I sensed in churches and among Christians. Suddenly words began to come to mind as I imagined what the Lord must think of most Christian commitment among professing believers today. I grabbed a pen and my notepad. In the light of what our Lord Jesus said to the churches in Revelation I wrote what He might say to us:
“My beloved child—
Do you love Me?
Do you really love Me?
I know that you say you do, but do you?
If you truly love Me, then—
Why do you not delight to spend time alone with Me?
Why do you not want to know the desires of My heart for you to pray about?
Why do you become so easily distracted by worldly things that have no eternal value?
Why do you neglect meditating on My Word that refreshes, revives, and nourishes you?
If you truly love Me, you will do what I know is best for you.”
* * *
Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?
Luke 6:46 (ESV)
If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words.
John 14:23-24 (ESV)

“It would seem that admission to the inner circle of deepening intimacy with God is the outcome of deep desire. Only those who count such intimacy a prize worth sacrificing anything else for are likely to attain it. If other intimacies are more desirable to us, we will not gain entry to that circle. The place on Jesus’ breast is still vacant, and open to any who are willing to pay the price of deepening intimacy. We are now, and we will be in the future, only as intimate with God as we really choose to be.”
J. Oswald Sanders
Enjoying Intimacy With God, p.17
The Lord Jesus wants you to be near Him for intimate fellowship. Does busyness with lesser things keep you away? It is possible for our heart to long for Him like David’s did.
O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory. Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you. So I will bless you as long as I live; in your name I will lift up my hands.
Psalm 63:1-4 (ESV)
